5 ways to make your bathroom more contemporary

When you look around your bathroom, how does it make you feel? If it is beginning to look a little tired, and not everything works quite as well as it should, perhaps it’s time for a new bathroom?

But deciding you need a new bathroom is the easy part. It’s much more difficult to decide what exactly you want in your new bathroom. For example, many people express the desire for a more contemporary bathroom. But what exactly does that mean?

Let’s take a look at five ways to make your bathroom more contemporary:

Clean sharp lines

Aim for sleek, clean lines in your bathroom for a contemporary look. You can emphasise these even further by using contrasting colours.

The image below shows one of our recent installations of a master en-suite. The stunning freestanding Breeze bath from Waters Baths of Ashbourne both complements and contrasts with the decor of the rest of the bathroom: Farrow & Ball Hague Blue paint, and Cashmire Oyster tiles from Minoli.

Wall-mounting

Also in the above bathroom, there are double basins sited on a floating solid surface. These are complemented by brushed brass wall-mounted basin mixers.

Floating surfaces and wall-mounting can both add an instant contemporary feel to your bathroom. They also make your bathroom feel much more spacious and, on a practical note, are easier to keep clean.

Also consider a wall-mounted toilet. This enables the toilet bowl to be mounted directly to the wall, and the tank concealed inside the wall. A wall-mounted toilet will therefore take up less space and also look more minimalist and contemporary.

Freestanding

Another key contemporary touch is to include one or more freestanding items in your bathroom.

A freestanding basin can sit flush on the floor, similar to a pedestal but as one simple piece. In the image below, not only is the Laufen Palomba Menhir basin freestanding, but it is also in the centre of the bathroom for a very different look.

And of course, a very popular freestanding item is a bathtub. A freestanding bath can be the perfect centrepiece for a contemporary bathroom, as well as being a wonderful way to unwind at the end of a long day.

The above image shows that it is also possible to have a semi-freestanding bath, in this case the Ebb bath from Waters Baths of Ashbourne. So the freestanding look is still possible even if you are short on space, or you could go completely freestanding, as with the natural stone Dusk2 bath from Waters Baths shown below.

Wet area or open shower enclosure

A walk-in shower or full wet room is a sophisticated contemporary look for bathrooms. Both are simple and elegant, and will make your bathroom look and feel more spacious.

The contemporary master en-suite pictured below features a large walk in linear shower, enhanced by an attractive and practical LED-lit storage recess.

Or you may decide to go for either a complete wet room, or a bathroom with an extended wet area, as shown below.

Feature tiling

A final key feature of contemporary bathrooms is the tiling. Our recent article How to Choose the Best Tiles for your Bathroom covered different types of tiling and how to make the best decision about tiling. But the right tiling for your walls and floor – whether you decide to match or contrast – can be the perfect finish for your new contemporary bathroom. We love the example below of an en-suite with striking Amazon tiling.
