Plant-based products for cleaning your kitchen

There are so many changes in our world at the moment that it can all feel very overwhelming. Which perhaps is one of the reasons why a growing number of us are feeling a stronger desire to get back to nature. Many people are motivated to move to a more sustainable way of living, to play our part in preserving the planet for future generations.

There are many small, simple changes in our everyday routines that can reduce our carbon footprint and could start to make a difference. One of these is to switch to plant-based cleaning products for your kitchen.

In this article we take a look at:

  • What are the advantages of using plant-based cleaning products?
  • What exactly are plant-based cleaning products?
  • Where can you get plant-based cleaning products?

What are the advantages of using plant-based cleaning products?

Some of the main advantages of plant-based cleaning products are:

  • They do not contain toxic chemicals
  • They use biodegradable ingredients
  • They do not use single use plastic
  • They do not generate harmful waste
  • They are cruelty free

Which means that you can get your kitchen looking sparkling clean without any qualms about how your cleaning products have been created or how you will dispose of the packaging.

What exactly are plant-based cleaning products?

If you’re wondering what exactly is meant by plant-based cleaning products, you’re not alone! After buying off-the-shelf cleaning products for years, it can seem almost counter-intuitive to start thinking about plants instead.

A simple definition of a plant-based cleaning product is one that is made from all-natural ingredients, mostly derived from plants. Many people assume that such products would not be as effective as  chemical cleaners, but this is not the case at all.

Most plant-based cleaning products work by using natural enzymes to dissolve grease and grime. Many also have natural disinfectants that kill bacteria and reduce odour, leaving your kitchen both germ-free and fragrant.

Where can you get plant-based cleaning products?

Many manufacturers are now selling various kinds of sustainable cleaning products. So it is worth scouting around some of your favourite brands to see what is available.

However, another option is to create your own plant-based cleaning products. Many products can be made by combining essential oils with other ingredients such as lemon juice, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and either castile or natural dish soap.

For example, one lovely recipe we’ve come across is for an all-purpose citrus & lavender cleaning spray. All you need to do is to combine the following ingredients into a glass spray bottle.

  • 10 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops lemon/eucalyptus essential oil blend
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon natural dish soap

This cleaning spray is great for work surfaces, kitchen cabinets and sinks. Not only will it help get everything in your kitchen nice and clean, but will leave a wonderful fresh fragrance for you to enjoy.

We hope that this article has been a helpful introduction to the concept of plant-based cleaning products. Why not decide to give them a try? After all, you want your kitchen not only to look beautiful and smell gorgeous, but also be as sustainable as possible.
