The idea that minimalist design is automatically devoid of character is misguided and unhelpful. Yes, a minimalist bathroom will benefit from clean lines and unfussy detail. However, an abundance of features and ‘stuff’ isn’t the only way to add character to a room. Here, we look at the ways that your minimalist bathroom can be clean and clear and also full of character.
What is minimalist design?
The mantra behind minimalist design is to simplify the aesthetic. Achieve this through a limited colour palette, uncluttered surfaces and walls, and clean, smooth lines. There should be a sense of light and space within minimalist designs that offers a feeling of clarity. This is why minimalist bathrooms are so popular. Not only are they easier to clean, but they provide a haven of calm in which to retreat.
Surface details
A popular material for minimalist bathroom design is stone slabs and tiles. There is such a huge range of styles here that you can achieve any design finish you like. To add character to a minimalist design, choose a stone tile which has statement detail. Marbles and granites are ideal for this. Since the stones are naturally mined in slabs, their features are unique and create a sense of depth in an otherwise uniform space.
Unusual fixture materials
While brushed or polished chrome are popular finishes for bathroom fixtures, they are by no means the only option. For something different, why not go for an eye catching copper or brass? Or alternatively a powder coated finish in black? When combined with an unfussy minimalist tap design, these finishes really stand out as an elegant statement.
One statement item
While lots of accessories would undoubtedly spoil a minimalist design, select just one statement piece. This can be hard in a bathroom with limited space. Consider an unusual towel rail, perhaps. Or maybe a contrasting feature wall or strip of tiles. The key with minimalist design is that this should be a stand alone feature that should ideally be functional.
Balancing tone and contrast
Minimalist bathroom design doesn’t mean that everything should be the same colour. An intentional contrast within the design gives depth and character without compromising minimalist principles. Try maintaining the same colour palette but contrasting materials, like teaming stone and wooden tones. Or maintain the same tiled finish but contrast the colour.
Use recesses
How do you avoid interrupting the wall line but maximise storage at the same time? Recessed areas look great, keep clutter from worktop surfaces, and maintain a streamlined wall. Make these recesses even more of a statement by including LED lighting. This will give a minimalist design warmth and depth.
Lighting
You may want to choose your bathroom lighting fixtures to be a statement piece. However, remember that lighting fixtures must comply with regulation lighting zones. By creating depth through lighting, you can stop a room from feeling flat and characterless. So invest in multiple layers of bathroom lighting source.
Large furniture
If you have the space, oversized bathroom furniture is not only luxurious, but is a real statement. A large, wall length rain shower will be a delight to use and build character in your room. Similarly, choose an extra long vanity unit. You’ll benefit from a fantastic look and also all of the storage that this contributes to your room.
Greenery
There are no design schemes that don’t benefit from a bit of plant life, and minimalist design is no different. A pop of greenery looks fantastic against monochrome or neutral colour schemes. If you have the floor space, try a large floor plant. For smaller rooms, a selection of succulents either in a wall recess or a sill looks great.
It perhaps should be said that we don’t advise doing all of these things – otherwise you may well compromise your minimalist concept!
