If you are planning to install a new kitchen it can be difficult to know where to start. One of the first decisions you need to make is whether to keep the layout roughly the same or to change it – perhaps extending your kitchen area at the same time.
When deciding how drastically to change your kitchen, one of the key considerations is the budget you have available. It is very easy to overspend, so you need to take into account every aspect of the work, including products – furniture, appliances, worktops – installation, and decorating. But whatever kind of changes you decide to make to your kitchen, you have a wonderful opportunity to create the kitchen of your dreams.
Let’s take a look at some creative ways to remodel your kitchen, whether you are keeping your existing layout or completely changing it.
Keep your current kitchen layout
In many ways it may seem like the easy option is to keep everything roughly in the same place as it is now. In theory, all you need to do is replace what is currently there with something newer, and you will have a better-looking, fully functioning new kitchen.
Whilst this can work well, it is also possible to keep the same basic layout but also incorporate some new features. You also have the opportunity to tweak a few things. Think about your current kitchen layout. Are there little foibles that either you don’t really like or make the kitchen cumbersome to use? Now is the time to change all that.
Even if you are keeping a similar layout, look for opportunities to:
- Increase storage space wherever possible, for example taller or wider cabinets and pullout storage shelves.
- Make sure that doors and drawers can open freely without blocking access to anything else.
- Add a kitchen island for additional workspace, storage and seating. Why not consider two?
- Include more open shelving and wall art for a curated, personalised look.
- Try filling any dead space with an armchair or small sofa.
Also be bold about your choices of colours and styles. This can completely transform the look and feel of your kitchen. For example, if you currently have a traditional farmhouse-style kitchen, why not opt for a more contemporary style, with a minimalist or industrial feel? Or if your kitchen is bright and white, go for darker more dramatic colours. Or vice versa.
Also consider the styles of your cooker, sink, worktops, splashbacks and lighting. You can mix and match different genres to create a unique kitchen that is all your own.
So there are many creative things that you can do to remodel your kitchen, even if you keep a similar layout. But you may also want to consider changing the layout to make more flexible use of the space you have available. Let’s take a look.
Change your kitchen layout
If you have a large kitchen space to work with, or are prepared to extend your kitchen, it is worth starting from scratch in terms of deciding what goes where. Many families are now using their kitchens not just for preparing and eating food, but for everyday living and entertaining.
So if you are doing a complete remodel, think about all of the activities you would like to use your kitchen for, and make sure that it works for you. Why not consider separate seating areas that can be used for different purposes at the same time, whilst still keeping family and friends together?
