Over the last couple of years we’ve noticed the emerging trend in home decor of bringing the outside in. Perhaps it all started during the pandemic, when many people yearned to be able to get out more but were unable to do so. So bringing the outside in seemed to be the next best thing.
But what does bringing the outside in actually mean? And what are some practical ways of going about it?
In this article we take a look at:
- What is bringing the outside in?
- What are the advantages of bringing the outside in?
- Three key ways to bring the outside in to your bathroom.
What is bringing the outside in?
The main idea behind bringing the outside in is to bring more greenery and natural elements into your home, to add a touch of nature and life to your living space. By doing this, you can make your interior feel more open, and completely change the appearance and ambience of your home.
What are the advantages of bringing the outside in?
Green is a very calming colour, and simply having more green and natural features in your home can bring a sense of calm and help to reduce stress and make you feel more alert.
But over and above this, one of the key advantages of having more plants and other natural elements in your home is that they help to purify the air. Plants not only absorb CO2 and release oxygen but can also filter out some of the toxic and harmful chemicals produced by devices such as screens, TVs and microwaves.
So bringing the outside in not only makes your home look brighter and better, but can also have a huge impact on your mood and wellbeing.
Three key ways to bring the outside in to your bathroom
Whilst the size and shape of your bathroom will influence the extent to which you are able to bring the outside in, here are three ways which you should be able to adapt according to the space you have available:
-
Create a plant display
Whether you just have space for one or two plants, or are lucky enough to have a larger area that you can cultivate into an indoor garden, living plants will really transform your bathroom. Many plants thrive in a warm moist environment, but if you are worried about being able to maintain them well, you could consider artificial plants : there are some wonderful high quality choices available.
If you are short on space, one visual trick you could try is to place one plant on your window sill then either have others on your outdoor window sill or grow foliage outside to draw the eye from inside the bathroom. This can create the illusion of there being much more greenery inside the bathroom than is actually the case.
-
Use green and natural decor in the bathroom
We saw earlier that green is in itself a calming colour, so even if you are not able to do much with plants, using green decor in the bathroom can really make a difference. For example, you could choose a soft green paint either for your bathroom furniture or a wall, and this will create a peaceful ambience in the room. You could also use different shades of green or botanical prints for accessories such as towels, rugs or light fittings.
An alternative to the above is to make the most of any window space that you have, and ensure that your windows reflects both light and greenery from outside. In this way you are bringing more greenery and natural elements into your bathroom without actually having to change the decor.
