Five ways to transform your bathroom into a spa

If you just love a trip to a spa, you’re not alone! The health and wellness sector in the UK is worth billions of pounds a year. And a trip to the spa can help you to feel  relaxed, pampered, and invigorated. The only problem is that most of us have neither the time nor the money to be able to enjoy a spa experience on a daily basis. But how wonderful would that be!

Well, an alternative is to recreate a spa experience in your own bathroom at home.

In this article we explore five ways in which you can transform your bathroom into a spathroom!

Go minimalist

The first rule of almost every kind of home makeover is to have a major declutter. And this is just as true of the bathroom as anywhere else in your home. Why spend time, effort and money trying to create a lovely spa environment if it is just going to be filled with clutter?

So have a really good clear out of your bathroom shelves, cabinets and drawers. Get rid of anything you don’t use. Out of date products can be thrown away, but there may be other items that you can give away to friends or to charity shops. But if you don’t use it, lose it!

Also evaluate your bathroom storage space to see if everything can  be cleverly tucked away. Imagine how great it would be to have a bathroom with no clutter on the surfaces. The image below shows a  bathroom like this, with a fantastic combination of stylish storage – a recessed mirrored cabinet and also a storage recess with LED colour changing lights.

Let in the light

Spas always seem to be light and bright, but equally not garish. So do all you can to create a bright and  airy ambience in your spathroom. Make the most of any natural light available, then augment this with stylish light fittings and an abundance of reflective surfaces including mirrors. See our recent article How to choose the perfect bathroom mirror for tips on choosing the best mirror for your bathroom.

Walk-in shower with seating

One of the main features of your spathroom is likely to be a large walk-in shower or wet area, such as that pictured below.

If space permits, why not consider adding seating to your walk-in shower? This could either be a water-resistant bench or inbuilt seating, as pictured below. The seating below is also heated and features LED lighting for an extra touch of luxury.

Back to nature

There is a strong interior design trend this year for bringing the outside in. You can achieve this in your spathroom by using natural materials, as in the bathroom pictured below.

Spas also have those wonderful natural fragrances such as lavender, rosemary, or ylang-ylang. You could achieve this with essential oil diffusers and scented candles, or by bringing fresh flowers or plants into your spathroom. And does champagne count?!

Luxury toiletries and towels

A final small but significant factor that can help reinforce the spa look, is to have some luxury toiletries and towels in your bathroom. Spas always seem to have huge fluffy towels and robes, which are easy to add to your own bathroom at home. And why not splash out on your favourite luxury toiletries, to treat yourself once in a while. Little things can help a lot.
