This is the time of year when many of us just long to hibernate. We wake up in the dark, go to work in the dark, and come back in the dark. Which can all start to feel very wearing.
The perfect antidote to this is to create some wonderful lighting in your home, that can lift your spirits and make you feel revived and refreshed. And what better place to start than your bathroom?
In this article we explore different types of lighting to consider for your bathroom. The good news is that you don’t have to choose between them : you can combine different types of lighting to get exactly the effect you want for your bathroom at any given time. Lighting to suit your mood.
Let’s take a quick look at:
- Ceiling lighting
- Wall lighting
- Mirror lighting
- Storage lighting
- Bath and shower lighting
Ceiling lighting
One of the most popular types of bathroom lighting are downlights. These are installed in a hollow recess in the ceiling and use LED bulbs to shine rays of light from the ceiling. Downlights can be angled to highlight bathroom features of your choice, and can often be dimmed. They are also a very energy efficient method of lighting.
Other types of ceiling lighting include pendant lights, smaller ceiling lamps, or larger more ornate lighting features such as chandeliers. All of these types of light are mounted to the bathroom ceiling and can achieve either dramatic or subtle lighting effects : the choice is yours.
Wall lighting
Wall lights in bathrooms can be used as well as ceiling lights as a great way to add layers of light to your bathroom. For example, if you need a brighter light when using cosmetics, a cleverly placed wall light can be just what you need.
Sometimes you may just want to use the wall lights for a more localised light rather than the overall lighting provided by the ceiling lights. Or you may decide to dispense with ceiling lights altogether and just have wall lights in your bathroom.
Wall lights come in a variety of different styles, so whatever ambience you are looking for in your bathroom, they could make a valuable contribution.
Mirror lighting
When planning your bathroom lighting, also consider combining lighting with mirrors, as this can really add warmth and ambience to your bathroom.
You can add lighting to mirrors in various ways. The example pictured below shows a heated mirror above which independently switched LED accent lighting has been added..
Storage lighting
We love using either white or coloured LED lighting in recessed storage areas. Not only is this a practical feature, but it also looks both stylish and pretty. The perfect finishing touch to any style of bathroom!
Bath and shower lighting
Another creative yet practical lighting option is to install lighting in or around your shower or bath. Let’s look at a couple of examples.
Below is a large shower that we installed in a family wet room. The shower has both an overhead shower and a hand shower, and we enhanced the design even further by creating two large storage recesses with LED lighting.
And when it comes to lighting around your bath, take a look at the fabulous example below. It features recessed storage areas both immediately above the bath and further up the wall, both beautifully highlighted by subtle LED lighting, for an overall magical effect.
We hope that the above ideas have helped you to start thinking about the best lighting for your dream bathroom. And if you are planning a new bathroom in 2023, we’d love to help make that dream a reality!
