Making your bathroom stand out from the crowd

When you come to refit your bathroom, it can feel like everything’s been done before! After all, how many configurations of basin, toilet and shower can there possibly be? Well, you’d be surprised! A bespoke bathroom space, for many of us, is the ultimate luxury; a balance of elegant surroundings and ease of use. So without compromising functionality, you can design a wonderfully unique stand out bathroom.

Furniture

It wouldn’t be a bathroom without the core furniture, so we wouldn’t recommend going too off piste! However, there are certain styles that are really worth considering when creating a stand out bathroom.

Bath

Nothing screams luxury more than a free standing bath. In a traditional bathroom scheme, you’ll benefit from a roll top bath with statement taps. Alternatively, for a more contemporary style, smoother edges work well. You can also get the look with a back to wall bath, which gives the impression of a free standing bath, with the ease of a fitted bath. Integrated or sunken baths bring a real spa feel to a bathroom and also benefit from giving the impression of more space.

Shower

While fittings are really important for the functionality of a shower, it’s the shape and positioning of this furniture that can really provide a stand out factor. If you have abundant space, think about positioning a central rain shower. This highlights the shower as the central point to the bathroom. Large showers feel more luxurious, so try using the full width of a bathroom. This gives you lots of room to showcase statement stone tiling and add recessed storage.

Basin

Your basin should be in keeping with the line of your bath and loo. This makes it a bit easier to choose, bearing in mind just how many variations of basin there are! Oversized trough-style basins are a great way to make a statement, and are also functional in a family bathroom where lots of people may be using the space. Also, don’t forget about storage around the basin. Use the opportunity to install a striking piece of furniture, but also take advantage of the opportunity to store as much away as possible.

Concept

For bathrooms, the concept that you choose can feel limited; traditional or contemporary. However, you can create a stand out bathroom within these stylistic lines. Remember that a stylish bathroom should avoid being cluttered, so storage should be up there on the list of things to remember!

Shapes

The shape of your bathroom furniture is crucial for the overall look of your bathroom. Square shapes and angled edges give a traditionally contemporary look, while exaggerated curves and ovals feel ultra modern and soft. That’s not to say that you can’t mix lines, of course!

Contrasts

Not everything has to be uniform. A stand out bathroom uses contrast to great effect. If you have a non-tile wall, think about how to create an accent with colour or wallpaper. Stone is ideal for contrasting finishes to create a sense of depth and character.

Character

Use the existing shapes and characteristics of the room. Not all bathrooms may have these, but when you do, embrace it to great effect. Loft spaces, exposed farmhouse beams, archways and large windows are all great features. When your bathroom design showcases these, it’ll naturally stand out from the crowd! Here, the free standing bath sits in a windowed alcove to create a luxuriously relaxing space.

Lights

There should be a balance of different lighting sources in a bathroom. These make the space functional and calming depending on whether you’re having a long soak or brushing your teeth!

Natural light

While you should diffuse as much natural light into a bathroom as possible, don’t forget about visibility. Obscured glass and blinds are great solutions that don’t disrupt natural light too much. However, your design can also help here. Mirrors and light stone tiling and basin surrounds help to diffuse the light around the room. This makes the room feel lighter and brighter.

Integrated lighting

We’re all familiar with integrated mirror lighting, and this is quickly becoming a standard within bathroom design. However, integrating LED lighting elsewhere really stands out as a great bathroom. Lighting within recessed storage is both atmospheric and softens the general wash of the room.

Textures

Build a variety of textures into your bathroom to avoid a room that feels flat and characterless. These textures give the room a sense of depth and warmth that makes it a welcoming and attractive space.

Natural Stone

This material is rich in different textures. From smooth travertine tiling to choppy split brick and glossy marble, intentional combinations look great! In fact, natural stone itself gives a fabulous textural feel. The graining of marbles and granites look striking on both flooring and splashbacks alike.

Greenery

The cool neutrals of stone and ceramics will always suit a splash of greenery. If you have the space, a large floor plant will make your room stand out immediately. Alternatively, a display of smaller succulents look minimalist and stylish, while providing the calm feel of the natural world.

Details

A bathroom by its nature involves lots of health or body care products. These can make the space feel incredibly cluttered, so it’s wise to keep as much stored away as you can. There are details, though that it is worth taking time on.

Decanting

To avoid the clutter of bottles completely, decant into glass vessels. You can even refill them from a zero waste shop and minimise the stuff in your precious storage!

Accessories

A quick and easy way to alter the feel of your bathroom is through accessories. This could be things like your towels and bathmat to display items in recess shelving. This bathroom showcases travel ornaments, but could very easily shift focus by changing the display items.
