Wet room or bathroom – which should you choose?

If you are planning to install a new bathroom or update an existing one, there are many different aspects to be considered.

One of these is whether to have a wet room or a bathroom. There are advantages to each, but which would be best for your home?

In this article we take a look at:

  • The advantages of wet rooms;
  • The advantages of bathrooms;
  • How to have the best of both worlds.

The advantages of wet rooms

A wet room is a completely waterproof bathroom with the shower area at the same level as the rest of the floor. There is no need for a shower enclosure or tray. Wet rooms can therefore look very streamlined and stylish in your home.

Three of the main advantages of wet rooms are:

  • Wet rooms can fit into a small space

With a wet room, small can be beautiful. They can fit into a very small bathroom space, so can be the ideal way of creating the contemporary stunning bathroom you have always wanted.

The image below shows a wonderful marble en suite wet room, featuring heated seating with subtle LED lighting.

  • Wet rooms are easily accessible to all

Because wet rooms are completely level, they are ideal for people with limited mobility. You could also use a wet room to shower your children, if you decide to let them in there!

We love the master ensuite pictured below, which features a large walk through shower with linear shower panel, LED-lit storage recesses and seating.

  • Wet rooms are hygienic

It is easier and less time-consuming to clean a wet room than a traditional bathroom, as everything is on one level and there are no awkward corners or gaps.

The waterproofing used for the wet room also eliminates damp and mould from the room, and there should be no leaks and water damage to sort out.

The advantages of bathrooms

So, wet rooms have many advantages. But some people will always want a bathroom in their home.

Let’s take a look at three advantages of traditional bathrooms:

  • Bathrooms are relaxing rooms

Many people really like relaxing in the bath. They want floor space to wander round, storage space for their bits and pieces, and an attractive bath for a good long soak.

Some bathrooms also become multi purpose rooms with the addition of features such as seating, a sound system, or a TV, as pictured below.

  • A bath can be a key design statement

There are some gorgeous baths available these days. Which means that you could create a unique bathroom with a bath as the breathtaking centrepiece.

Just take a look at the stunning limestone en-suite bathroom below, which features a fabulous Castello bath that is showcased even further by the window background.

  • Baths are important to home buyers

If you may consider selling your home in the not-too-distant future, you would be wise to keep a traditional bathroom in the house if you can. Wet rooms are also incredibly popular, but many buyers may be put off if there is not a traditional bathroom as well/instead. According to property experts, it is a common mistake to replace the only bath in your home, as many buyers view a bath as a non-negotiable house feature.
